Things that Matter

August 20, 2012

Pack a lunch
And fix her face
Today your little girl’s
Gonna join the race
She’s got a bag
That’s half her size
Time to swallow tears
And kiss goodbye

Got no choice
But to let her go
It’s a mighty pain
No one else could know
One last hug
Wish her well
Things that matter
Hurt like hell

Tempers shattered
All your light
Now the golden glow
Is an endless night
She held you up
For half a life
Nothing prepares you
To lose a wife

Got no choice
But to let her go
It’s a mighty pain
No one else could know
One last hug
Wish her well
Things that matter
Hurt like hell

Run

August 17, 2012

None of my possessions
Could cure my ailing life
Not my sixteen bedrooms
Not my modelpretty wife
I got a fancy car
And drove it far away
Drove right to the edge of
The good ole USA

No matter where I go
Buddy, there I am
Geography can’t help me
Cuz I don’t give a damn
I’m gonna get a shovel
And dig a giant hole
If I don’t find a remedy
To cure my aching soul

Sometimes I wish my daddy
Had beat me as a kid
Then I’d have a reason
For all the things I did
Deep down I feel guilty
Just for sucking wind
Maybe I was born with
Insufficient skin

No matter where I go
Buddy, there I am
Geography can’t help me
Cuz I don’t give a  damn
I’m gonna get a shovel
And dig a giant hole
If I don’t find a remedy
To cure my aching soul

Ain’t Nothin’ Better than a Dog

August 8, 2012

Rusty, Rover, Dusty, Clover, Thumper and Spike
Daphne, Dolly, Dabney, Molly, Jumper and Mike
Lucky, Franklin, Bucky, Jasmine, Happy and Bro
Sonny, Chester, Domino, Dexter, Grady and Moe

At the end of a crazy, hectic day
When you need somebody to play
Ain’t nothin’ better than a dog

Elmo, Gizmo, Ginger, Oso, Dallas and Duke
Winston, Fluffy, Waldo, Duffy, Opal and Luke
Spencer, Sparrow, Stallion, Pharaoh, Ribsy and Red
Parker, Pepper, Pedro, Viper, Apollo and Fred

When you need a faithful family friend
A dog is true and loyal to the end
Ain’t nothin’ better than a dog

Baron, Banjo, Bandit, Bingo, Lily and Zack
Groucho, Kona, Marlowe, Fiona, Lulu and Mac
Corky, Fido, Ollie, Dido, Espresso and Jet
Tobey, Yogi, Kobe, Hoagi, Boney and Babette

You might be thinking you’re real smart
But your brain is always smaller than his heart
Ain’t nothin’ better than a dog

Ballad of the Pitiable Politician

July 20, 2012

I love the working man
And I’d walk your picket line
But my wingtips give me bunions
And my sneakers need a shine
And it’s so darn hot
When I’m out in the sunny
You know I feel your pain
But I love that dirtymoney

Free trade ain’t so free
When we ship your job away
But those fat cats with their wallets
Will remember me someday
Disappearin’ factory jobs
Ain’t no kind of funny
You know I feel your pain
But I love that dirtymoney

All my favorite people
Are really corporations
Corporations don’t get sick
Or ask me for vacations
Politicians crave cash
Like a bear loves him some honey
You know I feel your pain
But I need that dirtymoney

It’s What You Do

July 14, 2012

It ain’t what you create
It’s what you do
That’s gonna be important
When you’re through

Who cares if you
Rewrote the record book
When you’re a liar and
A cretin and a crook?

So slap your name across
A thousand walls
But everything that’s built
Is gonna fall

It don’t mean much
Rising to the top
When your private life
Is one gigantic flop

A million statues
Won’t make you a god
When you’re feeding worms
Beneath the sod

It ain’t what you create
It’s what you do
That’s gonna be important
When you’re through

Sorry: A Duet of Heartache

June 28, 2012

Daddy said my tender heart
Leads me to pursue
Birds with broken wings
And stray dogs just like you

I’m sorry bout the mixup
I’m sorry I’m a fool
Didn’t mean to spend your birthday
Takin’ shots and shootin’ pool

I’m sorry that you took my car
And wrapped it round a tree
I’m sorry that I hocked my house
And gave my guarantee

I’m sorry I jumped bail
I’m sorry that I ran
I’m sorry that the PeeDee
Found me in my van

Always been I susceptible
To rascals just like you
All it ever got me was
A pocket full of blues

I’m a live tornado
Spewin’ mess and misery
Till I beat the bottle
It’s all I’m gonna be

Bitter

June 17, 2012

aaaaabitter

Alex lives for beauty
And the memory of a smile
From a love that never was
That continues to beguile

He’s a little ball of bitter
Muffling primal screams
Concocting better days
And waiting on a dream

Walter’s in his workshop
He got himself a plan
Turning lead to gold
He’s gonna be a wealthy man

He’s a little ball of bitter
Afraid to laugh or grin
Holding back on living
Until his ship comes in

Don’t bother with Maria
If you ain’t a wealthy guy
No money means no honey
She got bigger fish to fry

She’s a little ball of bitter
But she ain’t about to quit
Cuz a feller with a fortune
Will be a perfect fit

No Happy Hour for Henry
He don’t waste his life in bars
He’s got an audition
And the ladies love a star

He’s a little ball of bitter
He ain’t livin’ for today
Got no time for losers
He’ll show them all one day

Milk and Cream

May 23, 2012

i thought i
could find love
by seeking out
perfection
dreams of
peerless angels
clouded my
affection
took years for me
to wake up
and make the right
selection

Things that make you human
Make me love you more
I’m blessed to take your trash out
Or listen to you snore
I put away my fantasies
To realize my dreams
Drinking all the milk
To appreciate the cream

Second-String Chump

April 25, 2012

You sent me a text
When your man was away
Said we could meet
If I wanted some play

Things been ruff since I got dumped
But I ain’t gonna be your second-string chump

You wanted to meet
At the far end of town
So no one would see
You were messin around

I’ve been in one helluva a slump
But I ain’t gonna be your second-string chump

You call me up
At a quarter to four
Ya run outta ice
Can I get you some more?

I’ll do what I do to get over the hump
But I ain’t gonna be your second-string chump

We hooked up once
It wasn’t that good
You never called back
Like you said you would

Things been ruff since I got dumped
But I ain’t gonna be your second-string chump

ain’t gonna be your second-string chump
ain’t gonna be your second-string chump
ain’t gonna be your second-string chump

Time to Run

April 15, 2012

I don’t care about my marriage
I don’t care about the kids
I don’t care who I hurt
And I don’t care what I did

It’s time to have a bottle
It’s time to have some fun
It’s time to find a woman
And forget the things I done
It’s time to hit the honky tonks
It’s time for me to run

I don’t care how much she loved me
I don’t care about her pain
I don’t care if she gets lonely
I don’t care if she’s sane

It’s time to have a bottle
It’s time to have some fun
It’s time to find a woman
And forget the things I done
It’s time to hit the honky tonks
It’s time for me to run

I don’t care about my daughter
I don’t care bout my son
Growin up without a daddy
Never hurt me none

It’s time to have a bottle
It’s time to have some fun
It’s time to find a woman
And forget the things I done
It’s time to hit the honky tonks
It’s time for me to run
