In this godforsaken bar
Where all the dregs and outcasts are
I see the saddest drunks
I archive every punk-ass punk
Who’s lowlier than me
Amongst my nightly company
Perching on a barstool
Providing my narration
I’m the champion of ridicule
Dispensing defamation
For a smattering of fools
Inside my favorite location
Laughing at these losers,
These sorry woeful boozers
Is my greatest joy in life–
Once I had the perfect wife
But since she let me be
The laughs are all on me
Perching on a barstool
Providing my narration
I’m the champion of ridicule
Dispensing defamation
For a smattering of fools
Inside my favorite location

Walter thinks that someone
Is sleeping with his wife
If he knew it was me
It would mess up his life
I told him not to worry
To shelter him from strife
It’s considerate to lie
When you’re protecting a friend
Besides, everybody tells
A little fib now and then
My boss really likes me
And he’s such a great guy
He’s losing lots of money
But he doesn’t know why
If he knew I was embezzling
He would probably die
It’s considerate to lie
When you’re protecting a friend
Besides, everybody tells
A little fib now and then
I’ll never tell my wife
That I pawned her diamond ring
She got it from her grandma
And she really loves that thing
But cubic zirconia
Makes some pretty nice bling
It’s considerate to lie
When you’re protecting a friend
Besides, everybody tells
A little fib now and then

And I wonder sometimes, what is it in me that hates me?
—Richard Wilbur, Complaint
He was the perfect man
Every woman wants to meet
Loving and honest
And friendly and sweet
I love him so much
I hurt him so bad
I beat up his sister
And slept with his dad
I love him so much
I hurt him so bad
I took all his money
And burned down his pad
I love him so much
I hurt him so bad
Left him demolished
And totally mad
I love him so much
I hurt him so bad
Something inside me
Just has to be sad

This silly job sucks
My boss is a turd
Every time he turns his back
I flip him the bird
Got a tight little dress
Got some brand new shoes
Can’t wait to get home
And get ready for you
Gonna get myself ready
Gonna powder my skin
Gonna take you some places
That you ain’t never been
I got three kinds of lotion
Orange blossom shampoo
Can’t wait to get home
And get ready for you
Got some new stockings
And some lingerie
Don’t say nothing stupid
It could be your lucky day
You won’t stand a chance
When I’m finally though
Can’t wait to get home
And get ready for you

Huge and horrible things
Happen every day
I won’t try and hide
I won’t look away
Keeping it together
And trying to cope
With a handful of love
And a sliver of hope
I won’t give in
I won’t be torn apart
By the greed and hate
And anger in my heart
Keeping it together
And trying to cope
With a handful of love
And a sliver of hope
Walking up a hill
I’ll walk till I drop
The walk is all I got
Won’t ever reach the top
Keeping it together
And trying to cope
With a handful of love
And a sliver of hope

such a big man
you tell people what to do
you can scream and you can threaten
you can fire people too
personified destruction
a walking fist
knocking things over
to show that you exist
so full of empty
a monument of wind
a maelstrom of hollow
surrounded by skin

You don’t know my life
You don’t know my story
Don’t try and put me
In a category
You rag on everybody
That you ever knew
Thinking up ways
They ain’t as good as you
I ain’t hanging round
To hear you talk smack
You slander and smear
Behind everybody’s back
You rag on everybody
That you ever knew
Thinking up ways
They ain’t as good as you
There’s a million things about me
You’re never gonna know
Don’t try and stick me
In your pigeonhole
You rag on everybody
That you ever knew
Thinking up ways
They ain’t as good as you

The best part of my day
Is your smile
And your grace and your glamour
And your style
The best part of my day
Is your smile
Your countenance
Lights up a country mile
The best part of my day
Is your smile
Reminding me that
Life can be worthwhile
The best part of my day
Is your smile
And your laughter and your
Voice that beguile
The best part of my day
Is your smile
So won’t you set and
Visit for a while?

Got a shark from Gramma
It was soft and it was blue
It had some scary teeth
It tried to by me too
I wrestled with my shark
And ripped apart his hide
That mean and scary fishy
Was all cotton balls inside
“Whatever did possess you?
Goodness gracious Daisy Mae!
We can’t show this to Gramma”
I heard my mother say
Then I got in trouble
So I kicked and I cried
Nobody told me that the shark
Was not a shark inside
Daddy bought a puppy
To be my very own
My parents were frightened
To leave us alone
Silly silly grownups
Don’t they realize?
I know that my puppy
Is all puppy inside

Do you think
You’ll be safe
If you stick
Your head up there?
You should find
A better place
Before you run
Out of air
There isn’t
Sanctuary
Where the sun
Doesn’t shine
The world is
No less scary
And you’re gonna
Wreck your spine
It’s gonna
Hurt a lot
But you gotta
Pull it free
Don’t waste
The life you got
Pretending
Not to see
