My guts are bleeding
My anatomy’s afire
The fog is receding
I’m a loser and a liar
Takes a toll on my health
When I pretend to be ok
Been lying to myself
Since I sent you away
Alone in my room
A wayward little boy
Living on the fumes
Of the love I destroyed

You went out for some coffee
But you never came back
Now you call me on the phone
And you wanna slither back
You disrupt and take advantage
Everywhere you go
You owe a thousand dollars
To everyone I know
Do you ever stop to think
About the things you’re doin’?
Do you ever contemplate
Your trail of wreck and ruin?
You’ve worn out every welcome
From here to Timbuktu
After all the things you did
Why should I get back with you?
“I just need another chance”
Is all you ever say
Take your basket full of sorry
And please just go away

kindness knows no shame
—Stevie Wonder
Men are fierce and men are strong
I’m not here to get along
I shout and shove and get my way
People do the things I say
I’m not here to hold your hand
I’m proud to be an honest man
You won’t hear me apologize
Kindness is for gutless guys
I’m in charge; I make the rules
I’m not here to comfort fools
Do your job and don’t complain
I’m not here to ease your pain
I’m not here to be your friend
Love don’t matter in the end
Got no time for feeling sad
Cuz I’m a man just like my dad

I never made it home
To love you like I should
Got a long list of reasons
But none of ’em are good
I stopped to check the score
I had money on the game
I was headed out the door
When my appetizers came
I was feeling kinda lucky
My dice were getting hot
Some dude from Kentucky
Was lining up the shots
I was scared I’d miss something
I was totally right
It was the same old nothing
That I’m doing every night
I started painting red
Didn’t know when to stop
Got punched in the head
When I spit on a cop
So I’ll spend another night
In this stinky old cell
I never did you right
But I always meant well
I never made it home
To love you like I should
Got a long list of reasons
But none of ’em are good

Stop coming round
To tell me
How you figured it out
You found another lazy
Lying lily-livered lout
On a mission to detect
The legit from the faker
Like you think you get a vote
When a man meets his maker
Good people
Bad dudes
Guys you heard were gay
Losers, winners, boozers, sinners
Put your list away
On a mission to detect
The legit from the faker
Like you think you get a vote
When a man meets his maker
You can’t find
Anybody
To fit your ideal
Stop telling everybody
How you’re keeping it real
On a mission to detect
The legit from the faker
Like you think you get a vote
When a man meets his maker

If only I was taller
I’d be in the NBA
If only you were perfect
I never would betray
If only I were lucky
Things never go my way
If only I were handsome
Love would never go astray
If only everybody
Would just let me be me
If only somebody
Would love me just for me
If only life were fair
I never would complain
If only this world
Didn’t have so much pain
If only the past
Was something I didn’t know
If only you still loved me
Like you did long ago

In this godforsaken bar
Where all the dregs and outcasts are
I see the saddest drunks
I archive every punk-ass punk
Who’s lowlier than me
Amongst my nightly company
Perching on a barstool
Providing my narration
I’m the champion of ridicule
Dispensing defamation
For a smattering of fools
Inside my favorite location
Laughing at these losers,
These sorry woeful boozers
Is my greatest joy in life–
Once I had the perfect wife
But since she let me be
The laughs are all on me
Perching on a barstool
Providing my narration
I’m the champion of ridicule
Dispensing defamation
For a smattering of fools
Inside my favorite location

Walter thinks that someone
Is sleeping with his wife
If he knew it was me
It would mess up his life
I told him not to worry
To shelter him from strife
It’s considerate to lie
When you’re protecting a friend
Besides, everybody tells
A little fib now and then
My boss really likes me
And he’s such a great guy
He’s losing lots of money
But he doesn’t know why
If he knew I was embezzling
He would probably die
It’s considerate to lie
When you’re protecting a friend
Besides, everybody tells
A little fib now and then
I’ll never tell my wife
That I pawned her diamond ring
She got it from her grandma
And she really loves that thing
But cubic zirconia
Makes some pretty nice bling
It’s considerate to lie
When you’re protecting a friend
Besides, everybody tells
A little fib now and then

And I wonder sometimes, what is it in me that hates me?
—Richard Wilbur, Complaint
He was the perfect man
Every woman wants to meet
Loving and honest
And friendly and sweet
I love him so much
I hurt him so bad
I beat up his sister
And slept with his dad
I love him so much
I hurt him so bad
I took all his money
And burned down his pad
I love him so much
I hurt him so bad
Left him demolished
And totally mad
I love him so much
I hurt him so bad
Something inside me
Just has to be sad
by Richard W. Bray
